Local Spotlight: The Bowling House

After a small hiatus we are back and ready for 2020! We kick 2020 off with a look at one of Norwich’s hidden gems, The Bowling House. The Bowling House opened in March 2018 offering bowling, karaoke food and cocktails. A perfect mix for students. We sat down with Sam and discussed all things bowling, Norwich and student life in the city.

CS: Thank you so much for taking the time to chat to us, let’s start by telling everyone about yourself and how the Bowling House came about.

Sam: Not a problem at all. Well The Bowling House is basically a bar/restaurant that happens to do cocktails, karaoke and bowling. Essentially a bar with activities with bowling at the centre. We’re trying to stay away from certain expectations, which is why we don’t like to be called a ‘bowling alley’ we are so much more. We’re trying to go against the norm, we have our very own chief and it’s amazing to see the customers realise how good the food is, especially the Narcho’s, they have become a staple, sort of a house speciality – homemade chips with beef and all the favourites. Food and drink is what we do first, the bowling comes second as it really just takes care of itself.

CS: That food sounds amazing. It sounds like you have a really good set up here, a real student vibe for them to come and relax and have a good time. Have you always been in Norwich?

Sam: I’ve been in Norwich for about 10/11 years now. I started working with Jack, who is the general manager, at a cinema, which was a bit more grown up. Jack wanted to run his own business, which is where we got the idea from. We opened about a year and a half ago. It took a little while learning and it’s going from strength to strength. We wanted an alternative for students, something different, independent with a community feel and supporting local businesses. We tried to stay away from main stream themes, supporting each other and sharing ideas.

CS: It sounds like you have a good support system and a strong direction in which you want to take the business. How has the response been from the community and students?

Sam: Really good actually. UEA has a really big stretch to come out where NUA is right in the city. We’re getting a lot of newer students, especially on student nights, discount nights and when Fresher’s week comes around with a massive party. We encourage them to hang out at the venue and make it their own. The Playhouse near NUA is an unofficial student union which is what we want to make The Bowling House for this side of town – drinks in the evening a study/social area during the day.

CS: And how perfect that Benedicts Gate is right across the road! This place sounds perfect for students and young people especially for this side of town. It must be an exciting time for you. There must be some popular food and drink options amongst the customers?

Sam: It’s not so much a certain food or drink but more the group packages we have. I’d say the most popular is the package between 6 to 8 people. That gets you big bowels of a selection of food from the whole menu, £20, it’s low maintenance for everyone and super cheap.

CS: Wow, that is very cheap and perfect for students! And with Christmas and the new just passed, you must have been very busy?

Sam: Yes, we were. We were open new year’s eve with a F@*k It Dude, Lets Go Bowling NYE Party! Which was a great success. We also did Christmas bingo, food and specialty cocktails and a karaoke after party. We were closed Christmas and boxing day though.
